Conformément aux préconisations de l’article 38 de la loi du 21 germinal an XI (11 avril 1803), la première édition du "Codex medicamentarius Gallicus" vit le jour en 1818 (latin) et en 1819 (français). Afin de prendre en compte l’évolution de la thérapeutique et les progrès dans l’analyse des médicaments, dix autres éditions suivirent avec une périodicité variable. Nous avons ainsi retracé l’historique des onze éditions successives de la Pharmacopée française puis nous avons étudié de façon détaillée le contenu de chaque chapitre de la onzième édition (2012), afin d’en analyser les normes de qualité des médicaments et de leurs constituants qui s’imposent aux pharmaciens officinaux mais surtout industriels. Par ailleurs, nous avons examiné les liens entre la législation relative aux remèdes secrets et les pharmacopées ainsi que les corrélations entre la portée du monopole pharmaceutique et l’inscription d’un produit à la Pharmacopée. Nous avons enfin tenu à resituer le caractère normatif et contraignant de la Pharmacopée française dans le contexte actuel de primauté de la Pharmacopée européenne sur les pharmacopées nationales.
