Bodemzoutheid is een van de belangrijkste abiotische stressfactoren, die een ernstige bedreiging vormt voor de landbouw in aride en semi-aride gebieden in de wereld. Suikerriet (Saccharum officinarum L) is matig gevoelig voor zout met een drempelwaarde van 1,7 dS m-1. Er werden echter grote verschillen gevonden in dit gewas voor wat betreft de zouttolerantie. Kalium (K) en silicium (Si) verbeterden significant (P ≤0.05) de groei, opbrengst en sapkwaliteit van suikerriet onder zoutstress. De gunstige effecten van K en Si waren meer uitgesproken in zoutgevoelige genotypes dan in zouttolerante genotypes. De belangrijkste mechanismen van K en Si gemedieerde zouttolerantie in suikerriet waren de verminderde opname van Na+ en het transport ervan naar de scheut, verhoogde K+ accumulatie en het behoud van een hogere K+/Na+ verhouding, wat een goede indicator is om zouttolerantie te beoordelen.
