Après avoir étudié les compétences linguistiques d'une centaine de personnes positionnées en situation d'illettrisme, nous nous sommes centrés sur l'analyse des compétences techniques, cognitives, sociales et linguistiques mises en œuvre par dix opérateurs illettrés en situation de travail. Nous les avons observés dans des entreprises des secteurs secondaire et tertiaire, puis nous avons recueilli leurs témoignages et analysé les documents écrits présents sur leur poste de travail. Ces données nous ont permis d'analyser le niveau de prescription à leur poste ainsi que les écarts avec ce qui est réellement en œuvre pour y répondre. Ces écarts témoignent dans leur versant positif de capacités à dépasser la tâche requise à leur poste et dans leur versant négatif à des contournements liés aux difficultés de ces opérateurs dans leur rapport à l'écrit. Enfin, nous avons proposé des pistes de formations à partir des réponses que ces opérateurs apportaient aux situations de travail rencontrées.
