The dictatorships of Europe before and after World War II are part of our common European history. The knowledge of their rise, their often long existence and demise is more necessary today than ever. However, the dictatorships are usually repressed, forgotten or unbearably simplified or removed from sober analysis as an inexplicable fall of sin. This also applies to urban planning history. There, the urban planning of the dictatorships finds little attention and if so, then often only the gigantic paper planning, which are pathologised and released from the international context. The present book is oriented differently in terms of content and methodology: the debate with the different dictatorships of Europe, so the basic attitude, requires a European perspective, a European cooperation and a European interpretation. The editors bring the experience they have gained as part of their research on urban planning under Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler. With this book, an overall overview of the urban planning of the dictatorship of Salazar is presented for the first time - an absolute novelty in the European area, where Portugal has so far found little interest. The book spans a wide spectrum: it shows the legal and institutional conditions such as the concrete planning and projects of dictatorial urban construction in Portugal, it illustrates the urban development in the two major cities Lisbon and Porto, but also in the small towns and in the countryside. And it addresses the urban planning of the two great colonies in the period of dictatorship: Angola and Moçambique.
