Der Leistungssport erfreut sich in unserer Gesellschaft großer Beliebtheit und besitzt einen hohen Identifikationswert für die Athleten. Das Aufwachsen im Leistungssport hat enorme Auswirkungen auf die gesamtbiographische Entwicklung von jungen Sportlern. Vor diesem Hintergrund und auf Grundlage der Rekonstruktion einer Biographie eines Mädchens aus der Rhythmischen Sportgymnastik geht der Autor Sven Brademann der Frage nach, wie die Biographie durch den Leistungssport sozial organisiert wird. Es wird daraufhin ein Konzept des Leistungssports als Sozialisationsinstanz entwickelt, welche die gängige Sicht auf den Leistungssport erweitert. Der Leistungssport wird darin in seiner hemmenden und förderlichen Wirkung für biographische Phasen, das Verhältnis von Familie, Schule und Sport sowie für Identitätsprozesse beschrieben. Ein Überblick zur gesellschaftlichen Rahmung des Leistungssports und zum Stand der empirischen Arbeiten zum Thema wird gegeben und diskutiert. Für Pädagogen, Trainer, Betreuer, Sport- und Sozialwissenschaftler enthält das Buch einen interessanten biographischen Verlauf und dessen Deutung aus der Perspektive einer jungen Leistungssportlerin.
