Vor dem Hintergrund des globalen Wettbewerbsumfelds gewinnen Produktionsnetzwerke zunehmend an Bedeutung. Als Reaktion auf die Managementpraxis wurde der Netzwerkgedanke in den letzten Jahren zum "Mainstream" organisationstheoretischer Forschungen. Die bisher vorliegenden Ansätze konzentrieren sich jedoch überwiegend auf rein ökonomische Zusammenhänge und werden der Vielschichtigkeit des Untersuchungsgegenstandes nur teilweise gerecht. Udo Mildenberger gibt einen Überblick über vorhandene Erklärungsansätze der Evolution von Produktionsnetzwerken. Aufbauend auf einer kritischen Analyse dieser Ansätze entwickelt der Autor ein umfassendes, stark sozial- und verhaltenswissenschaftlich geprägtes Theoriekonstrukt zur Erklärung von Produktionsnetzwerken. Der Autor untermauert die theoretischen Aussagen durch eine Analyse von Interaktions- und Kommunikationsbeziehungen in diesen Netzwerken mit Hilfe eines Simulationsmodells.
