Doch anstatt in die USA weiterzureisen, blieben Bruno Taut und seine Lebensgefahrtin Erica unfreiwillig dreieinhalb Jahre in Japan. Im Tagebuch der ersten sechs Monate ist gespiegelt, wie das euphorische Lebensgefuhl des Touristen den Sorgen und Lebensumstanden des Exilanten weicht. Alltagsszenen und Feste, Lichtstimmungen und Landschaften, abendlich erleuchtete Straaen und Restaurantbesuche, aber auch die groaen Sehenswurdigkeiten des Landes wie Kaiserpalaste und Fuji: Fasziniert saugt Taut all das auf. Sein Tagebuch notiert minutios Beobachtungen und Begegnungen, Urteile uber Kunst und Religion, uber alte wie neue Architektur. Der genieaende Gast wurde bald zum teilnehmenden Kritiker und Mitgestalter in Architektur und Kunstgewerbe, nicht zuletzt aus der Notwendigkeit heraus, seinen Lebensunterhalt zu bestreiten. Im nahezu taglich verfassten Erlebnisprotokoll, das erstmals auf deutsch publiziert wird, sind Eindrucke und Gedanken ganz frisch abgelegt. Ein uberflieaender, telegrammstilartiger Duktus ist dabei zugleich Zeugnis von Uberwaltigung und Ordnungsbemuhen. Das Geschriebene diente ihm auch als Bericht fur Verwandte und Bekannte in Deutschland. Uberliefert ist hierin ein ausgezeichnetes Dokument der Situation Japans in den fruhen 1930er Jahren. Der erste Band umfasst das Jahr 1933, reich illustriert mit Tauts Skizzen und Fotos. Band 2 wird das Jahr 1934, Band 3 die Jahre 1935 und 1936 enthalten."
