Bruno Taut war 1933 kaum vier Wochen in Japan, als er vom Meiji Shobo Verlag den Auftrag erhielt, ein Buch uber seine Eindrucke zu schreiben. 'Nippon mit europaischen Augen gesehen' wurde sofort ein Bestseller. Der prominente Architekt, dem sein Ruf vorauseilte, hatte seit seiner Ankunft in Japan zahlreiche Vortrage gehalten, Kunst- und Kulturdenkmaler besichtigt und alle wichtigen Architekten der 'Moderne' getroffen. Mit ihnen diskutierte er Probleme der japanischen Modernisierung und Industrialisierung. Seine Auaenansicht als Fachmann war und ist gefragt: Noch die 1991 aufgelegte japanische Taschenbuchausgabe von 'Nippon mit europaischen Augen gesehen' erlebte bis heute 17 Auflagen. Das bei uns nahezu unbekannte Originalmanuskript uberdauerte die Zeit im japanischen Verlagsarchiv und erscheint nun erstmalig auf deutsch. Die kritische Ausgabe ubernimmt die Bildauswahl der japanischen Ausgabe, die ebenfalls von Taut selbst entwickelt wurde. Im Buch beschreibt er als Europaer das damals im Einzelnen noch unbekannte Japan. Der sich modernisierenden japanischen Gesellschaft rat er, das traditionelle Konnen und Wissen zu bewahren, zu uberdenken und neu zu bewerten; einer unkritischen Ubernahme von 'westlichen' Mustern erteilt er dagegen eine klare Absage.
