Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, einen theoretischen Beitrag zu den ressourcenbasierten Ansätzen, der Absorptive Capacity und dem Konzept der Pfadabhängigkeit zu leisten. Anhand einer explorativen qualitativen Untersuchung in Deutschland und China und eines nicht-rekursiven Simultaneous Equation Models konnten Belege für einen selbstverstärkenden Effekt der lieferantenspezifischen Absorptive Capacity und des Relational Knowledge geliefert werden. Somit können sowohl lieferantenspezifische Investitionen als auch eine lieferantenspezifische Absorptive Capacity als Quellen relationaler Renten zu Wechselkosten in Lieferantenbeziehungen und damit zu Pfadabhängigkeit führen.
