Nach dem Zerfall des Kommunismus stellt die Zusammenarbeit mit den mittel- und osteuropäischen Staaten eine neue Herausforderung dar. Vorstellungen von Armut und Gewalt in diesen Ländern prägen bis heute das Denken der Menschen in Westeuropa. Im Deutschen erscheint allgemein kaum etwas so negativ wie die Vorsilbe ?Ost?. Diese Vorstellungen von einer Nation im Ausland sind oft ausschlaggebend für deren Image. Genau in diesem Kontext wird eine starke Auslandskulturarbeit immer wichtiger. Zudem wird eine gemeinsame Region viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit bekommen als ein einzelnes Land. Auf dieser Grundlage wurde die Initiative ?Plattform Kultur Mitteleuropa? als kulturelle Zusammenarbeit Österreichs mit Polen, der Slowakei, Slowenien, Tschechien und Ungarn gegründet. Sie versteht sich als Forum zur Förderung des kulturellen Dialogs sowie zur Unterstützung von Projekten, die gemeinsame mitteleuropäische Kulturinteressen beinhalten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Rahmenbedingungen und Hintergründe einer solchen Thematik aufgezeigt. Anhand der Plattform sollen die Aufgaben und der Nutzen von multilateraler kultureller Zusammenarbeit dargestellt werden.
