Während die Anzahl der Krankheitstage deutscher Arbeitnehmer sinkt, nimmt die Zahl derer zu, die dauerhaft arbeitsunfähig sind und aus ihrem Beruf ausscheiden müssen. Gerade im primären Bildungsbereich klagen Lehrer zunehmend über körperliche und psychische Beanspruchungsfolgen - dem Burnout-Syndrom. Zahlreiche Studien zeigen, dass die Entwicklung von Burnout im Zusammenspiel vieler Variablen zu sehen ist. Ein im Kontext der psychischen und physischen Belastungen und Beanspruchungen bisher unbeachtetes Phänomen sind die Auswirkungen von Gerechtigkeitsüberzeugungen. Der amerikanische Sozialpsychologe Melvin Lerner (1965) nannte diese Überzeugungen den Gerechte-Welt- Glauben. Als ein prägendes Persönlichkeitsmerkmal hat er nicht nur Einfluss auf die Denkprozesse (Kognitionen) des Menschen, sondern auch auf deren Handlungen und andere Persönlichkeitsmerkmale. Mit der vorliegenden empirischen Studie konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass starke Gerechtigkeitsüberzeugungen bei Lehrern eine schützende Wirkung vor Burnout haben. Überdies begünstigen sie die Ausprägung anderer Merkmale einer Person, die die Entstehung von Burnout hemmen können.
