Wir sind Deutschland! Oder Österreich! Oder gleich Europa! Und meist stolz darauf. Aber warum sind wir Gruppe? Welche Motive haben wir uns zusammenzuschließen und wie wissen wir, wo wir dazu gehören? Diesen Fragen widmet sich die Autorin Dina Elmani, eine österreichische Politologin palästinensischer Herkunft, in dem sie sich mit ihren Wurzeln beschäftigt. Die Frage aufwerfend, warum sich eine arabische Gruppe entschloss eine neue, palästinensische Identität auszubilden. Im ersten Teil zeigt sie die Instrumente und Merkmale sozialer Gruppenbildung auf. Der Fokus liegt auf kommunikativen, kulturellen und sozialen Gedächtnisinhalten. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit widerspiegelt diese Inhalte in der Praxis: In Essays erfährt der Leser anhand von Erzählungen des im Exil lebenden palästinensischen Vaters der Autorin, durch welche Symbole und kulturelle Riten sich die Zugehörigkeit des Individuums tatsächlich manifestiert. Es sind dies nicht nur sichtbare Symbole wie Yasser Arafat, sondern auch Ereignisse, wie die Intifada oder religiöse Feste, die Bindungen über imaginäre Grenzen hinweg sichern.
