Los trabajos reunidos abordan diferentes cambios por contacto en español, con perspectiva sincrónica y diacrónica y en canales comunicativos orales y escritos. Por un lado, destaca la variedad de fenómenos analizados, entre otros, la concordancia de número, el leísmo femenino, la distribución de las formas verbales del pasado, las construcciones con los verbos haber y hacer o los marcadores por así decir/(lo) y el contraargumentativo por eso. Asimismo, el contacto del español se produce con distintas lenguas tanto romances peninsulares como no indoeuropeas (euskera, zoque, otomí, chichimeca jonaz y tz'utujil). Por otro lado, los contextos culturales donde se produce el contacto son diversos y complejos, y las variedades de español de contacto no son valoradas de la misma forma. Por ello, hay que explicar los cambios como interacción dinámica entre el material lingüístico, las realidades sociolingüísticas y la trayectoria y procesos actitudinales y cognitivos del hablante.
