Dennoch sind Begriff und Klischee bis heute präsent. Dieses Buch geht der Frage nach, wann das Interregnum Eingang in die deutsche Geschichte fand und warum es sich dort behaupten konnte. Mit einem Längsschnitt durch mehr als 500 Jahre Historiographie erschließt es die Schlüsselrolle, die jener meist negativ und als Umbruch gesehenen Periode für die Interpretation der deutschen Geschichte zukam. Dabei entsteht ein neues, vielschichtiges Porträt der Zeit und ihrer Persönlichkeiten.
