Das lateinische Kaiserreich von Konstantinopel war eine der interessantesten Kreuzfahrerherrschaften. Unter maßgeblicher Mithilfe der mächtigen Seehandelsstadt Venedig wurde die alte Kaiserstadt Konstantinopel auf dem Vierten Kreuzzug erobert und geplündert. Zugleich entstand hier am Bosporus ein lateinisches Kaiserreich, das sich vergeblich bemühte, den alten Glanz des byzantinischen Reiches weiterzuführen. Der Band analysiert am Beispiel des lateinischen Kaiserreichs von Konstantinopel erstmals die Wechselwirkung zwischen Konzeptionen kaiserlicher Herrschaft und großräumigen Herrschaftsverbünden im östlichen Mittelmeerraum des 13. Jahrhunderts im synchronen und diachronen transkulturellen Vergleich. Kaiserlicher Herrschaft ist hinsichtlich Anspruch und Verantwortlichkeitsbereichen großräumige königliche Herrschaft. Möglicherweise ist die Kombination von höchsten theoretischen Ansprüchen und reellem Pragmatismus ihr zentrales Kennzeichen. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht der Typus des mediterranen Kaisertums, der sich durch die Eigenschaft Multiplizität auszeichnet und durch die Notwendigkeit, sich intensiv mit anderen Kulturen und anderen monotheistischen Religionen auseinanderzusetzen. Um das komplizierte Wechselspiel von Handel, Religion und Politik bei der Genese und Ausgestaltung großraumüberspannender Herrschaft analysieren zu können, greift die vorliegende Arbeit auch auf die Denkfigur der imperialen Ordnung zurück. Der Vorteil dieses Forschungsdesigns liegt darin, die hochkomplexe Realität des Mittelmeerraums diachron und synchron besser als mit 'Reichskonzeption' fassen zu können. Die Untersuchung des lateinischen Kaiserreiches zeigt, dass religiöse und kulturelle Differenzen im Bereich des ehemaligen byzantinischen Reiches als ausschlaggebend für den unterbliebenen Aufbau einer imperialen Ordnung angesehen werden können.
