Lautverschiebung, die vor mehr als 1000 Jahren das Hochdeutsche aus dem Germanischen ausgliederte und bis heute wichtige Grundlage der Gliederung der deutschen Dialekte ist, ist seit ihrer Entdeckung durch Jacob Grimm Gegenstand kontroverser Auseinandersetzungen gewesen. Zahlreiche der unterschiedlichen Methoden und Ergebnisse der Beschäftigung mit diesem lautlichen Phänomen seit den Anfängen der wissenschaftlichen Germanistik werden in diesem Band wiederabgedruckt, um die Möglichkeit zu geben, in der Vielzahl der Theorien einen eigenen Standpunkt zu finden. Ferner dienen der Orientierung ein Forschungsbericht sowie eine Bibliographie zur 2. Lautverschiebung.
