Description

This biography is the first to provide comprehensive information about Paul Celan's entire life path in text and image. This explains she enters a field of tension and faces a double challenge: Celan decidedly rejected the biographical, especially the biographical approach to his poetry, and was also extremely skeptical about the medium of photography. Only a single framed photograph was visible in his apartment: that one picture Celan possessed of his mother, who was murdered by the SS at the age of 47 in Ukraine. And yet, this documentation, from images to be explained and in texts accompanied by images, seeks to report on Celan's life as hauntingly as it is episodic. Because every anecdote and every picture, however much it is attached to the surface and seem to violate Celan's apodictic statement "Real poetry is antibiographical", the ethical and poetological dimension of his life is ineradicably inscribed. And so this book draws from private photographic archives and from Celan's estate, especially from the still unpublished diaries, precisely in those places where the poet speaks of his mental disturbances and his poetic work and resistance as to himself. From them is quoted here for the first time in detail.
