Denn das Festhalten des Erlebten und dessen Bezug auf Gegenwart und Zukunft waren ihm nun vordringlich. Nach wie vor ungebrochen ist sein Interesse an den Hervorbringungen seiner Schriftstellerkollegen und der nachwachsenden Generation sowie das Bestreben, in seiner Lyrik für die Eindrücke und Erkenntnisse der späten Jahre den knappsten und sinnfälligsten melodischen Ausdruck zu finden. Die Empathie und die Sorgfalt, womit er darüber hinaus bis zuletzt die vielen tausend Zuschriften und Anliegen seiner Leserinnen und Leser beantwortet hat, machen seine Briefe zu einem unverzichtbaren Teil seines Werkes und einem auch zeitgeschichtlich ergiebigen Gewinn. Ein Nachtrag mit den seit Redaktionsschluss neu aufgefundenen Korrespondenzen beendet diese Sammlung und wird im abschließenden Band fortgesetzt.
