Johannes Bocer (1526-1565), seinem Geburtsort (Hausberge bei Minden) nach dem westfälischen Humanismus, seinen Hauptwirkungsstätten nach aber eher dem Humanismus des Ostseeraums (speziell Mecklenburgs) zuzurechnen, war zu seiner Zeit einer der produktivsten und geschätztesten deutschen Dichter in lateinischer Sprache. Mit der Edition seiner in den Jahren 1562-1564 entstandenen neun Eklogen wird die 1996 mit der Veröffentlichung der "Bucolia" von Simon Lemnius in der Reihe "Frühe Neuzeit" begonnene Dokumentation neulateinischer deutscher Eklogen-Dichtung fortgesetzt. Die Texte Bocers vermitteln einen guten Eindruck von der thematischen und formalen Vielfalt dieser schwer faßbaren, bis ins 17. Jahrhundert hinein sehr beliebten und besonders im Rahmen der Gelegenheitsdichtung viel genutzten literarischen Spezies. Neben einer deutschen Übersetzung ist auch dieser Edition ein Kommentar beigegeben, in dem, abgesehen von der notwendigen Erläuterung von regional- und zeitgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen und sonstigen Realien, hauptsächlich Anklänge an die klassische bukolische Tradition bzw. an zeitgenössische Muster nachgewiesen werden. Da zu Bocer wie zu vielen anderen prominenten deutschen Dichtern des 16. Jahrhunderts kaum Forschungsliteratur vorhanden ist, schien es dem Herausgeber sinnvoll, dem Editionsteil eine möglichst stoffreiche, aus den Quellen erarbeitete Einführung in Vita und Gesamtwerk Bocers beizugeben und sowohl hiermit wie mit der erstmaligen Zusammenstellung eines auf Vollständigkeit angelegten Werkverzeichnisses (mit Standortnachweisen) weitere Forschungen zu diesem nicht nur als Bukoliker interessanten und lesenswerten Autor zu erleichtern.
