Was heißt Kulturgeschichte des Politischen? Es ist alles andere als eindeutig und unumstritten, was das Politische, als auch, was Kultur, als schließlich auch, was Kulturgeschichte ist – umso mehr gilt das für eine »Kulturgeschichte des Politischen«. Auf der Tagung des SFB 496 in Münster im Oktober 2003, die dieser Sammelband dokumentiert, ging es um eine Bestandsaufnahme: Welche geschichtswissenschaftlichen Ansätze firmieren derzeit unter diesem Etikett; worin liegen fundamentale Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede; welche theoretischen Konzepte werden prominent dazu herangezogen; welche Gegenstandsbereiche werden damit erschlossen? Bei den methodisch-theoretischen Beiträgen ebenso wie in den exemplarischen Fallstudien geht es um die Frage, auf welche Weise und mit welchen Ergebnissen die sogenannte kulturalistische Wende für die Politische Geschichte der Neuzeit fruchtbar gemacht worden ist und zukünftig noch gemacht werden kann. Schließlich soll der Sammelband auch zur Klärung einiger verbreiteter Mißverständnisse und Vorwürfe beitragen, mit denen gerade eine Kulturgeschichte des Politischen immer noch konfrontiert ist. Die hier unter diesem Etikett versammelten Aufsätze haben gemein, daß sie von einem weiten, sozialanthropologischen Kulturbegriff ausgehen, wonach Kultur über die fundamentale Fähigkeit des Menschen zur Symbolerzeugung definiert wird und die Gesamtheit der symbolischen Hervorbringungen – von der Sprache über die Institutionen und Alltagspraktiken bis zur Wissenschaft – umfaßt. Ihr gemeinsames Anliegen ist die Dekonstruktion eines überhistorisch-universalisierenden und essentialistischen Verständnisses politischer Handlungsformen und Institutionen, Wertvorstellungen und Motive. Der Weg dazu führt über die Rekonstruktion von Diskursen und Praktiken, in denen sich die zeitgenössischen Bedeutungsstrukturen greifen lassen, ohne die die zeitgenössischen Macht- und Herrschaftsstrukturen nicht angemessen zu verstehen sind.
