Erhard Reuwich hat mit den Illustrationen des Gart der Gesundheit die Verfahren und Konstruktion evidenter Bilder, die Naturbeobachtung wiedergeben und Wissen vermitteln sollen, auf entscheidende Weise gepragt, wenn er nicht sogar die naturwissenschaftliche Illustration der Fruhen Neuzeit erfunden hat. Mit dem gedruckten Prachtband sollte 1485 die Tradition der antiken Krauterbucher wiederbelebt werden. Diese besondere Stellung des Gart der Gesundheit steht im Gegensatz zu seiner wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitung, in der man das Augenmerk bislang auf die Krauterbucher des 16. Jahrhunderts richtete. Zwar wird er bisweilen als zentraler Ausgangspunkt fur die illustrierten naturwissenschaftlichen Werke der Fruhen Neuzeit begriffen, dennoch ist eine ausfuhrliche Analyse dieses Initialbuchs als zentraler Bestandteil der Wissenschaftsgeschichte sowie seiner Abbildungen bislang ausgeblieben. Neben den Bildern wird das Buch in seiner Gesamtheit analysiert, wobei samtliche Akteure, also Drucker, Autor, Auftraggeber, Kunstler, und auch mogliche Rezipienten berucksichtigt werden. Das illustrierte Krauterbuch brachte spezielle Herausforderungen mit sich, da hier in Bild und Text die Versuche zusammenkommen, die Gestalt der Pflanzen systematisch zu erfassen.
