Les parties de la plante ne seraient-elles pas toutes comme des modifications d'une seule et même forme : des feuilles transformées, soumises à mesure de leur croissance à des processus de déploiement ou, au contraire, de contraction et d'intensification ? Des feuilles transformées ? Et comment les arts, la peinture mais aussi la photographie et le cinéma, ont-ils composé avec cette forme à la fois volatile et détaillée, bruissante, massive et foliacée, autant qu'avec le milieu, avec l'air, la radiation solaire, sans quoi la forme-feuillage ne saurait exister ? Clélia Nau braque l'objectif sur un motif longtemps condamné à ne croître que dans les marges de l'art. Elle redonne voix à cette vie profondément autre, mystérieuse, à ces feuillages dont le mode d'existence spécifique est de bruire ou de végéter. Un bruire qui n'a pas pour seule fonction d'apporter un supplément de grâce, qui peut aussi perturber la fiction, interférer avec la fable représentée. Un végéter qui n'est pas qu'existence passive : en latin, vegetare désigne ce principe actif de vie grâce à quoi le végétal produit tout au long de sa vie de nouveaux organes, déploie, mieux, invente sa forme, marque même de sa vitalité. L'ambition de ce livre est de montrer par les images, par le pouvoir révélateur des détails, les puissances invisibles, les transactions secrètement à l'oeuvre dans le végétal. Il ouvre des perspectives inédites sur l'activité créatrice, sur la production des formes artistiques, en les ré-enracinant dans l'énergie même du vivant. Il nous apprend à regarder les oeuvres autrement, selon un point de vue non plus exclusivement humain, non plus systématiquement indexé sur la traditionnelle hiérarchie instituée entre les règnes. Ce que l'auteur promeut, c'est une nouvelle " écologie des formes " : les éléments inclus dans l'espace de la représentation sont à penser comme appartenant tous à une même communauté solidaire de vivants. Conçu comme une sorte de cabinet de curiosités végétales, l'ouvrage entend enfin suggérer que l'art est peut-être l'un des derniers lieux où le lien de l'homme avec la nature, si souvent questionné et partout menacé, trouve encore à se redéfinir et à se préserver.
