Die Bestreitung der seit Eratosthenes wissenschaftlich erwiesenen Kugelgestalt der Erde durch eine Anzahl von Theologen in der Nachfolge Diodors von Tarsus wird meist als wissenschaftshistorisches Kuriosum ohne weitreichendere Bedeutung angesehen und ist bislang nicht umfassend analysiert worden.Die altchristlichen Abweichungen vom sphärischen Weltmodell werden hier sowohl ihrer theologischen Motivation als auch ihren soziopolitischen Kontexten nach bis ins siebente Jahrhundert hinein umfassend nachgezeichnet. Die Schule Diodors erweist sich dabei als Teil einer breiteren Bewegung im syromesopotamischen Raum, welche die im AT wiedererkannte nichtsphärische Kosmographie der lokalen Tradition gegen das Modell der griechischen Wissenschaft in Stellung bringt. In der Debatte des fünften und sechsten Jahrhunderts gewinnt diese Schule Dominanz, sowohl durch die umfassende theologische Fundierung der Kosmographie (Verknüpfung mit Christologie und Eschatologie) als auch den Einfluß der Bibelkommentare besonders Theodors v. Mopsuestia. Ein Vergleich mit der westlichen Debatte zeigt jedoch, daß solche Positionen sich weder weiter entwickelt noch verbreitet hätten ohne ein im common sense des vorderen Orients verwurzeltes Substrat alternativer kosmographischer Tradition.
