Description

This comprehensive historical volume explores cosmography from the 15th century onwards, tracing how this science combined geography and astronomy to reshape humanity's understanding of the universe. The book examines cosmography's evolution across nearly four centuries, revealing its deep connections to politics, exploration, culture, and technological advancement. With particular focus on the often-overlooked contributions of Portugal and Spain, this Springer publication documents the remarkable intellectual activity that emerged from the Iberian and Italic peninsulas during the Age of Discovery and Scientific Revolution. Through detailed historical context and rigorous scholarship, the work demonstrates how cosmography served as a bridge between empirical observation and cultural transformation, making it essential reading for historians, astronomers, and anyone interested in how European societies understood their place in the cosmos during this transformative period.
