Da kanonische Schriften über das Schicksal Mariens keine Auskunft geben, haben Transitus-Berichte, die vom Tod und von der Himmelsaufnahme Mariens erzählen, noch bis ins Mittelalter einen schwierigen Status: Sie werden einerseits in gutem Glauben tradiert und andererseits von Theologen kontrovers diskutiert. Am Beispiel der mittelalterlichen Rezeption des Transitus Mariae B des Pseudo-Melito von Sardes (6. Jh.) wird bibelepisches Erzählen als voraussetzungsreiches medien- und gattungsübergreifendes Erzählverfahren profiliert. Die Studie nimmt in den Blick, unter welchen diskursiven Bedingungen Transitus-Berichte entstehen und wie spezialdiskursive Narrative der Assumptio Mariae in einen höfisch-geistlichen Interdiskurs des Mittelalters integriert werden. Der interdiskurstheoretische Ansatz ermöglicht die Analyse von Diskursinterferenzen in Text- und Bildzeugnissen sowie die Aufdeckung von Argumentationsstrukturen im Spannungsfeld von Gelehrtenwissen und populärer Frömmigkeitspraxis. Indem Fallstudien an volkssprachlichen Texten die spezifisch höfische Aneignung des apokryphen Stoffs aufzeigen, leistet die Studie einen Beitrag zur Funktionsbestimmung bibelepischen Erzählens in der Vormoderne.
