Der Band ist dem französischsprachigen Elsassroman gewidmet, der sich nach der Annexion Elsass-Lothringens im Jahre 1871 als eigenständiges literarisches Genre etablierte. Die Autorin nimmt eine detaillierte Analyse eines umfangreichen Corpus vor, welche stichhaltige Aussagen über die literarische Verarbeitung der Identitäts- bzw. Alteritätsproblematik im Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen ermöglicht. Vor dem Hintergrund des deutsch-französischen Antagonismus kommt es dort zu einer einzigartigen Konfrontation zweier konkurrierender Nationenkonzepte. Dank der relativen Autonomie des literarischen Feldes konnten im Roman Botschaften ausgedrückt werden, für die im politischen Feld jener Zeit kein Platz war. Leistete der französischsprachige Elsassroman einen Beitrag zur Konstruktion einer tragbaren elsässischen bzw. lothringischen Identität oder trug er stärker zur Bildung eines Mythos bei? Für welche politischen Botschaften dienten die «verlorenen Provinzen» als Projektionsfläche? Wie reagierte man im Elsass auf das Identifikationsangebot aus «Innerfrankreich» und welche Spuren im kollektiven Gedächtnis lassen sich bis in die heutige Zeit verfolgen? Diesen und weiteren Fragen wird in dieser Arbeit nachgegangen.
