Seit der Ablösung der Kolonialmacht Frankreich durch England ringt die frankokanadische Provinz Bas-Canada um ihre (kulturelle) Autonomie. In drei Fallstudien untersucht der Autor herausragende Momente der Suche nach literarischer Selbständigkeit, die durch die kreative Anverwandlung internationaler Schreibweisen erreicht wird. Im 19. Jahrhundert schottete sich Frankokanada - nie jedoch vollständig - von realistischen und naturalistischen Stiltendenzen ab. Gleichzeitig entstand neben dem roman de la terre der Stadtroman als eigenständige Gattung. Nach der Révolution tranquille erreicht die Littérature québécoise ein Stadium umfassender Autonomie: Der Roman Les fous de Bassan von Anne Hébert läßt die eigenständige Weiterentwicklung von modernen Erzählverfahren erkennen, wie sie Faulkner in The Sound and the Fury prägte.
