Die in diesem Band erstmals publizierte Korrespondenz des österreichischen Schriftstellers Hermann Bahr mit dem tschechischen Autor, Theatermann und Politiker Jaroslav Kvapil beleuchtet ein weitgehend unbekanntes Kapitel der Berührung der slawischen mit der deutschsprachigen Kultur. Im Zentrum stehen dabei die vielfältigen ästhetischen wie (kultur-)politischen Aktivitäten der beiden Protagonisten, die zweifellos zu den exponiertesten Künstlern ihrer Zeit und ihres Sprachkreises zählten. Obwohl sie die engstirnigen nationalen Vorstellungen ihrer Zeit nicht teilten, werden die unterschiedlichen Ansichten der beiden Künstler spätestens in der Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges transparent. Während Hermann Bahr die Beschäftigung mit Böhmen dazu diente, so etwas wie eine genuin österreichische (später: europäische) Identität zu konstruieren und an die Reformierbarkeit Österreichs in einen Staat sich selbst und frei bestimmender Völker glaubte, war Kvapil an der Entstehung der Tschechoslowakei entscheidend beteiligt. Trotz dieser Differenzen hielt der 1896 einsetzende Briefwechsel bis zu Bahrs Tod an.
