Einige kriegsgegnerische Schriftsteller emigrierten während des Ersten Weltkrieges in die Schweiz, weil sie in ihrer Heimat weder Werke noch Gedanken frei öffentlich machen konnten. In der Schweiz fanden sie beschränkte Möglichkeiten, gegen den Krieg zu schreiben. Diese Studie untersucht die vielfältigen Ansichten zum Krieg von sieben Autoren aus Frankreich, Deutschland und Österreich-Ungarn. Welche Standpunkte vertraten sie? Welche Veränderungen erfuhren diese Einschätzungen mit dem Fortschreiten des Krieges? Wie unterscheiden sich ihre Argumentationsweisen von den Kriegsbefürwortern? Einige Autoren wurden zur Zielscheibe der heimischen wie auch der gegnerischen Propaganda. Als Beispiel mag Romain Rolland mit seinem Au-dessus de la Mêlée dienen: Ist dieses Werk tatsächlich ein Paradebeispiel von Kriegsgegnerschaft? Warum wurde es von der französischen Zensur unterdrückt und auch in Deutschland kritisiert? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen dienen als Quellengrundlage alle Schriften, die von den sieben Autoren während der Zeit ihres Aufenthaltes in der Schweiz veröffentlicht wurden.
