Dès le début de la Grande Guerre, la femme de lettres franco-allemande Annette Kolb (1870-1967) et l'écrivain français Romain Rolland (1866-1944) saisirent tous deux leur plume pour protester contre la vague montante des nationalismes fanatiques qui portait la majorité des intellectuels allemands et français et engloutissait sur son passage les valeurs culturelles occidentales communes aux différents peuples européens. Leur première rencontre en 1915 marqua le début d'une amitié nourrie par un commun engagement en faveur de la paix et de la réconciliation. Cet ouvrage présente et commente leur correspondance, restée jusqu'ici inédite, ainsi que les écrits d'Annette Kolb sur Romain Rolland et les extraits du Journal de ce dernier sur sa correspondante. Ces documents apportent des éclaircissements sur telle ou telle action pacifiste, notamment sur le projet de création d'une Revue Internationale neutre et font revivre la vie intellectuelle et littéraire, organisée autour de réseaux relationnels, des opposants au conflit. Leur analyse permet de mieux cerner les fondements idéologiques de leur engagement et en fait apparaître les similitudes comme les divergences.
