La poesía religiosa cómico-festiva alcanzó su mayor auge en el reinado de Felipe IV (últimos decenios) y en el de Carlos II, período en que es escrita regularmente por dramaturgos del ciclo calderoniano como Agustín de Moreto y por autores como Diego Calleja, Manuel de León Marchante o, en América, la propia Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Aun cuando hoy en día resulte casi desconocido, se trató de un subgénero lírico muy practicado a mediados del XVII y constituye un capítulo indispensable del conceptismo hispano. En la primera parte de este libro se estudia el contexto socio-político, religioso y literario, así como las peculiaridades formales y la organización textual de este tipo de poesía pública, a menudo destinada al canto y dirigida a un receptor culto, a pesar de su tono popularizante. En la segunda parte se edita medio centenar de poemas del cancionero D-249 de la Biblioteca Central de Zúrich, incluyendo el posiblemente único corpus de poesía de Agustín de Moreto. Los textos se acompañan de un cuerpo de notas en el que, además del aparato crítico, se dilucidan los dos niveles de sentido que operan simultáneamente en estos poemas, restituyendo así al lector actual la competencia para disfrutar de los abundantes juegos verbales y la jocosidad que los caracteriza.
