Description

This book problematizes the role of education in an increasingly mediatized world through the lenses of creativity, new media, and consumerism. At the core of the issue, the author argues, creativity in art education is being co-opted to serve the purposes of current economic trends towards designer capitalism. Using an East meets West approach, jagodzinski draws on Deleuze and Guattarian philosophy to explore visual and popular culture in Korean society, addressing the tensions that exist between designer education and art that explores the human condition. In doing so, he challenges art educators to envision a new paradigm for education which questions established media ontologies and incorporates new ways to confront the crisis of the Anthropocene. Review “The essence or heart of this book will reorient and challenge art education in the era of misconceived creativity and designer capitalism. Assemblaging and intersecting Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas, Taoist concepts, Korean popular culture, and bio and media art, jagodzinski deeply and brilliantly offers ways art educators can challenge dominant and representative thoughts in art and education. Most interestingly, the author opens up new possibilities and doors to explore the complexity and interrelationships between Taoism and Deleuze|Guattari philosophy.”  ― Ryan Shin, Professor, Art and Visual Culture Education, University of Arizona, USA “jagodzinski’s analysis of popular and visual culture in South Korea will engage readers with melodramas, films, K-pops, and even PC games. In this book, Korea's cultural singularity provides insights into the capitalist problems circulating through postmodern control societies in the form of desire, control, biopower, and ecology. I am fascinated by ways he invites readers to explore how the assemblages of nature, culture, and technology in the posthuman era are addressed through his minorization of South Korean popular culture.”―Ahn, In Kee, Professor, Department of Art Education, Chuncheon National University of Education, South Korea From the Back Cover This book problematizes the role of education in an increasingly mediatized world through the lenses of creativity, new media, and consumerism.
