Entre la fin du XIVe et le milieu du XVIe siècle, les Pays-Bas s'imposent comme l'une des principales scènes artistiques du monde occidental. Mieux : l'art néerlandais acquiert ses lettres de noblesse en étant reconnu, plus que tous les autres, comme un art du présent. Alors même qu'il est considéré comme le plus grand artiste de son temps, Michel-Ange critique vertement la "peinture flamande", faite pour "tromper la vue" en montrant "des choses plaisantes pleines d'agrément, ou des choses dont on ne puisse parler en mal, comme des saints ou des prophètes", quand l'art italien se présente comme "une copie de la perfection de Dieu, et un souvenir de la peinture divine". Les récriminations du maître témoignent de l'importance prise par l'art et les artistes des anciens Pays-Bas, au milieu du XVIe siècle, mais aussi des qualités qu'on leur accorde au sud des Alpes - un goût pour le plaisir visuel, une recherche des émotions les plus intenses et un intérêt concret pour le monde quotidien et contemporain. Jan Blanc reconstitue ici brillamment les conditions dans lesquelles l'art des anciens Pays-Bas s'est ainsi progressivement imposé sur la scène internationale, en inventant de nouvelles manières, profondément modernes, de penser l'art et son rapport au monde, sans pour autant renoncer aux liens étroits qui l'unissent aux formes inventées à la fin du Moyen-Age. De l'avènement de Philippe II le Hardi (1384) à la scission des Pays-Bas en 1581, ce vaste parcours aborde les grands maîtres de la peinture (Jan van Eyck, Petrus Christus, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, Jan Gossaert, Joachim Patinir, Jan van Scorel, Pieter Bruegel I), mais également l'enluminure, le dessin, la gravure, l'architecture, la sculpture et la tapisserie - autant de domaines où les artistes néerlandais ont excellé durant cette période.
