Cet ouvrage a reçu le Filaf 2019 du meilleur livre dans la catégorie Beaux-Arts remis en juin 2019, par le Festival Festival International du livre d'art et du film. Comment comprendre le monde au-delà du visible immédiat ? Jusqu'où les paysages mondes de Pieter Bruegel (v. 1525-1569) interrogent-ils les apparences ? On associe généralement le célèbre peintre flamand à l'invention du paysage moderne, aux scènes de paysans et aux diableries de Jérôme Bosch. Mais Bruegel n'est pas toujours là où on l'attend. Ses tableaux captivent par le rendu réaliste du détail et par l'ampleur de la vision, mais ils mettent en scène un paradoxe : tout en séduisant l'oeil extérieur, ils en appellent à l'oeil intérieur, spirituel. Ils entraînent le spectateur dans une quête visuelle et mentale du monde visible qui conduit vers le domaine de l'invisible. Ce livre met en lumière cette caractéristique fondamentale des oeuvres de Bruegel et analyse les procédés visuels élaborés par le peintre pour troubler et défier notre regard. Déceler les traces des puissances divines et diaboliques cachées dans la trame du paysage et révéler la dichotomie sans cesse rejouée entre aveuglement moral et discernement spirituel est le propos central des deux auteurs.
