LE LIVRE Quelques années après sa mort, Rembrandt van Rijn fut accusé par l'avocat et dramaturge néerlandais Andries Pels d'avoir été le "premier hérétique de l'art de peinture". Il met notamment en cause la manière insuffisamment idéalisée dont le peintre a représenté les corps féminins, mais aussi le mépris que Rembrandt affichait à l'égard des modèles antiques et des grands maîtres de la peinture européenne. A rebours de cette approche, cet ouvrage propose de prendre au sérieux les propos de Pels, en les rapportant aux choix de Rembrandt, qui, durant sa vie et sa carrière, n'a jamais cessé d'affirmer sa singularité vis-à-vis de ses maîtres et de ses contemporains. Cette singularité biographique et artistique est envisagée dans cet ouvrage à travers la notion d'originalité qui, depuis l'Antiquité et, a fortiori, à partir de la Renaissance et des prémisses de ce qui constituera, au XVIIe siècle, la Querelle des Anciens et des Modernes, devient l'un des enjeux centraux de la critique poétique, rhétorique et artistique. En se présentant comme un peintre et un graveur original, qui fait valoir la primauté de ses choix artistiques, l'authenticité de ses oeuvres et le caractère inimitable - et odnc sans cesse imité - de sa manière, Rembrandt jette ainsi les bases d'une nouvelle conception de la peinture, où la critique des règles de l'art et les enjeux associés à la visibilité du génie se heurtent de façon volontairement polémique aux principes de l'imitation.
