Grâce aux résultats spectaculaires de la campagne de restauration du Retable de l'Agneau mystique, nous pouvons admirer aujourd'hui le polyptyque, mais aussi l'ensemble de l'oeuvre de Jan van Eyck, avec un tout nouveau regard. Cette campagne menée à Gand même au sein du Museum voor Schone Kunsten a constitué une opportunité extraordinaire pour organiser la plus grande exposition de tous les temps consacrée à Van Eyck, tout en l'accompagnant du présent ouvrage. Ce livre richement illustré replace l'oeuvre de Jan van Eyck dans son contexte historique et artistique, tout en faisant apparaître les multiples interactions avec les autres arts de son temps. Il combine de manière très innovante les informations les plus récentes sur l'oeuvre de l'artiste, repoussant les frontières de l'étude scientifique de ce maître absolu de l'art occidental.
