Un vrai créateur, inclassable, ni impressionniste, ni naturaliste mais romantique, buveur, dévoreur de femmes, de nourriture, de vie, bourgeois faux pauvre mais vrai révolté, accusé d'avoir ordonné la demolition de la colonne Vendôme, exilé politique en Suisse où il décédera en 1877 dans la commune de La Tour-de Peilz... Après des décennies de silence sur Courbet, l'entrée au musée d'Orsay d'un tableau de petites dimensions a déclenché une avalanche de biographies et d'études. Cette monographie de référence, abondament illustrée, fait le tour complet du personnage en incluant les dernières découvertes (correspondance) ainsi que les oeuvres récemment restaurées ( L'Atelier par exemple). Elle paraîtra à l'occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance de l'artiste.
