Description

Guy de Cointet est un artiste français né en 1934 et mort en 1983. Il part aux Etats-Unis en 1965, d'abord à New York, puis, à partir de 1968, à Los Angeles. Il commence sa carrière en tant que graphiste, puis devient l'assistant de l'artiste californien Larry Bell. Son oeuvre s'inscrit dans la filiation avec le surréalisme et la poésie visuelle. Il utilise comme moyen d'expression la codification, la typographie, passant de la lettre au dessin dans ses premiers tableaux, puis produisant des centaines de dessins aux écritures cryptées, hiéroglyphiques. Artiste reconnu tardivement, son influence sur la scène californienne des années 1970 est attestée par des artistes tels que Paul Mc Carthy, Mike Kelley, Allen Ruppersberg, John Baldessari. Il est présent dans les collections du Moma et du Centre Pompidou. Cette monographie est la première de cette importance consacrée à l'artiste. L'auteur, Frédéric Paul, a le mérite de déchiffrer pour nous cette oeuvre complexe et de nous en faire mesurer la portée dans l'histoire de l'art du XXe siècle.
