Description

William Turner (1775-1851) is one of the most famous and innovative painters in art history. It owes its notoriety to the light-flooded landscape images and seascapes of his late work phase, which can be called the precursor of Impressionism. He was not only anticipated in terms of colour design, but also with regard to his choice of topics, the confrontation with new means of transport (such as the locomotive and the steamship), the parliamentary fire, the slave ship and the beach robbers. However, Turner preferred to paint picturesque landscapes and cities, especially the nature of Switzerland and Scotland, the cathedrals and abbey ruins in England, castles on the Rhine and Moselle, as well as in Wales and the dreamlike Venice. German-language publications that provide an overview of the work of the English painter are rare. The volume presented here closes a knowledge gap as the excellent early works, which are impressive views of Gothic buildings - especially cathedrals - are depicted and analyzed. The art historian Michael Imhof succeeds in a new look at the complete work of Turner. In addition, he put together the most high-quality works for the book from his point of view. They are undoubtedly of a special visual appeal.
