Pourquoi diable ces carnets n'ont-ils pas été brûlés par John Ruskin, chargé du recensement des oeuvres du Maître, malgré ses déclarations ? Peut-être pour la raison inscrite au crayon sur l'un des quelques carnets épargnés : "Conservé seulement comme preuve de dérèglement mental". Cohen&Cohen a donc décidé, avec Alain Jaubert, de raconter les circonstances de la redécouverte de ces érotiques de Turner ; l'histoire de Ruskin, la "légende" des dessins brûlés ; de rappeler les nombreuses anecdotes sur la vie privée du peintre. Nous présentons ces dessins, entre simples graffitis obscènes (très obscènes parfois), académies (plutôt déformées par le point de vue très inhabituel de l'artiste), "reportages" sexuels lors de voyages, scènes nocturnes étranges qui annoncent Degas, etc. Enfin, comme dans le cas de Courbet avec L'Origine du monde et ses fréquentes représentations de cavernes noires et béantes, nous nous demanderons s'il n'existe pas de correspondances étroites entre ces dessins et la fascination de Turner pour les gouffres, les failles, les plis des paysages. D'autant que certains des graffitis les plus érotiques naissent dans les pages de ces carnets parmi de beaux paysages de campagne, de villes et de montagnes.
