De la vieille Europe des années 1950, avec ses banlieues ouvrières et ses bals populaires, aux paysages de la lointaine Asie, en passant par les plaines gelées de l'Alaska ou les déserts de la Chine, le photographe saisit " l'image juste ". Originaire de Lyon, Riboud entame à trente ans son grand voyage à travers le monde. Grande-Bretagne, Turquie, Algérie, Afghanistan, Inde, Chine, Japon, Mexique, Vietnam, Niger, Alaska... comprendre le monde requiert une observation attentive et pour se forger une opinion, le photographe se rend là où les sociétés bougent : grève des dockers en 1954 en Grande- Bretagne, Algérie lors de son Indépendance en 1962, Nord Vietnam en 1975, foules de la révolution islamique en Iran en 1979, sans oublier les métamorphoses de la Chine, du Ghana, du Japon... " La photographie ne peut pas changer le monde, mais le montrer quand il change ", soulignait-il. Ses images sont autant de rencontres avec d'autres peuples, que des invitations à découvrir la beauté de l'ailleurs. Au fil des routes poussiéreuses ou enneigées s'esquissent une science des cadrages, une recherche de l'harmonie. " Je tire mon chapeau au Marc géomètre et sensible ", salue son ami Henri Cartier-Bresson.
