Quelle est l’importance du sujet dans la photographie ? Quel rapport existe-t-il entre l’auteur photographe et son sujet, entre le « je » et le « je photographie »? Sur quels critères s’appuyer pour une évaluation juste de l’œuvre d’un photographe ? Pourquoi certains auteurs photographes refusent-ils de s’enfermer dans la seule pratique de la photographie et s’illustrent-ils aussi dans l’écriture, le cinéma, la peinture ? Le sujet photographique est considéré, dans le présent travail, comme un point d’ancrage où se nouent à la fois quête iconographique (que photographier ?), quête médiologique (en quoi le sujet informe-t-il l’essence de la photographie?) et, en dernier lieu, questionnement sur l’identité de l’auteur (en quoi le sujet représente-t-il l’homme photographe ?). La photographie, en tant qu’art mécanique, est une poïétique de réduction qui met à l’écart le « je » du photographe au profit du sujet photographié. Cette difficulté oblige le photographe à se questionner avec plus d’intensité et de détermination sur l’art, sur son identité et sur la possibilité ou non de se représenter dans les formes photographiques.
