Description

Photography Theory brings together forty of the world's most influential art historians and theorists in animated debate on the fundamental nature of photography. Featuring Victor Burgin, Joel Snyder, Rosalind Krauss, Alan Trachtenberg, Geoffrey Batchen, Carol Squiers, Margaret Iversen and Abigabel Solomon-Godeau among others, this seminal work explores competing perspectives on what photography actually is. Some contributors view photographs as optically accurate impressions of the world, whilst others emphasise their role as memory devices for people and places. The book addresses photography's position within cultural discourse, from its perceived associations with bourgeois life to its broader significance in visual culture. Nearly two centuries after its invention, photography remains conceptually contested, and this collection captures essential theoretical debates that continue to shape how we understand this medium. Essential reading for students, photographers and anyone seeking to understand photography's theoretical foundations.
