Description

Eugène Viala (1859-1913) était à la fois peintre, écrivain et graveur, mais c'est surtout dans la gravure à l'eau-forte que son art se développe dans une véritable singularité. C'était une nature indomptable et rebelle, un être tourmenté, indépendant, en marge de la société. Misanthrope et solitaire, croyant anticlérical, libre penseur anarchiste, il se définissait avant tout comme un grand amoureux de la nature. Ses gravures ont pour sujet privilégié certains aspects austères de sa terre natale, le Lévézou ? : mornes landes où un étang semble une lumière, pierres effondrées dans la désolation des ravins déserts, clochers perdus dans un crépuscule de rêve, humbles maisons du Rouergue. Il avait une prédilection marquée pour les figures d'arbres tourmentés, luttant contre les éléments. Ses estampes sont marquées d'une noirceur presque diabolique. L'angoisse et l'obsession de la mort sont omniprésentes. Il y a dans sa manière une grande profondeur, de l'âpreté, et beaucoup de tristesse. La dimension fantastique et visionnaire de son oeuvre inscrit Viala dans la filiation des peintres-graveurs du xixe siècle qui, de Francisco de Goya à Odilon Redon, furent adeptes du pouvoir suggestif des noirs de l'encre.
