Au tournant du XIXe siècle, l'école d'art britannique devint la plus dynamique et la plus remarquable en Europe. Alors que J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) excellait dans le genre du paysage, Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) porta l'art du portrait à de semblables sommets de créativité et d'inventivité, que le présent livre se propose d'examiner. Au tournant du XIXe siècle, l'école d'art britannique devint la plus dynamique et la plus remarquable en Europe. Alors que J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) et John Constable (1776-1837) excellaient dans le genre du paysage, Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) porta l'art du portrait à de semblables sommets de créativité et d'inventivité, que le présent livre se propose d'examiner. Enfant prodige, Lawrence succéda à Joshua Reynolds comme " peintre ordinaire de sa majesté " le roi George III à l'âge de 18 ans, devint le principal portraitiste de son temps et président de la Royal Academy of Arts en 1820. En 1814, le prince Régent lui commanda une série de portraits de tous les responsables politiques et militaires de l'Alliance qui s'était coalisée pour vaincre Napoléon. Aujourd'hui exposés dans la célèbre " Waterloo Chamber " du château de Windsor, ils offrent un témoignage exceptionnel de l'incarnation du pouvoir au début de l'Europe moderne. Au-delà des gloires militaires, Lawrence observa et représenta aussi l'émergence de nouvelles formes de masculinité, plus sobres et moins théâtrales, celles de ces financiers, industriels, collectionneurs ou ministres qui firent le succès de l'Empire britannique. Lawrence fut aussi un observateur exceptionnel de la société de la Régence, avec un don remarquable pour les représentations intimistes, parfois troublantes, de femmes, d'enfants et d'adolescents, à l'huile, au pastel ou à la craie, qui explorent de manière unique les fragilités de l'âge et du genre. Sa collection incomparable d'estampes et de dessins, constituée tout au long de sa vie, fut une source d'inspiration constante, mais fut dispersée après sa mort. Le présent ouvrage offre un aperçu complet de son art et jette un nouvel éclairage sur le travail et la personnalité de l'un des artistes les plus secrets et les plus doués de l'ère romantique.
