Surnommé le "Picasso Cubain', Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) est reconnu comme le précurseur d'une peinture du métissage issue des cultures africaines, européennes et américaines. Il cherchera à conjuguer les influences surréaliste et modernes de son temps avec les visions fantastiques de la nature luxuriante de son pays natal. L' OE U V R E G R AV E En 1994, le musée du dessin et de l'estampe de Gravelines (France) publiait le premier catalogue raisonné des estampes et des lithographies de l'artiste Wifredo Lam. Depuis cette date, de nombreuses informations données par les collectionneurs, les marchands et les musées rendaient nécessaire la réalisation d'une version revue et corrigée de cet ouvrage. Mais une découverte majeure, une centaine de plaques gravées et une épreuve du bon à tirer, justifiée, signée, de chacune d 'entre elles, remisées chez son imprimeur Giorgio Upiglio et exhumées lors du déménagement de son atelier de la Via Fara, ouvrait une perspective éditoriale ambitieuse. En 1997, "L'édition de l'An 2000', comprenant une grande parties de ces plaques retrouvées, commençait. L'établissement d'un nouvel ouvrage devenait indispensable afin d'inclure ces feuilles dans le cadre de son oeuvre gravé et lui donner une dimension magistrale. Ce projet a donc entrainé l'établissement d'un second catalogue raisonné dans lequel est proposée une numérotation chronologique en continu avec une table technique détaillée et, contrairement à l'ouvrage précédent, une reproduction de chaque oeuvre en couleurs. Les notices sont publiées en anglais ; les textes sont traduits en français, espagnol et chinois.
