Ne en 905, Constantin etait le fils de l'empereur Leon le sage et de sa maitresse Zoe: l'Eglise n'ayant jamais accepte cette quatrieme union du souverain, Constantin est d'abord considere comme illegitime et ne gagne le titre de porphyrogenete (en grec ne dans la pourpre ), qui designe les membres de la famille royale, que de haute lutte. S'il accede au titre d'empereur romain d'Orient en 913, il n'exerce reellement le pouvoir qu'a partir de 944. Plus habile dans sa politique interieure qu'exterieure (il echoue contre les Arabes en Crete en 949), il fut aime et respecte de son peuple jusqu'a sa mort en 959. Cet empereur raffine et erudit consacre de longues heures a l'etude du protocole de la cour byzantine, d'ou il tire Le Livre des Ceremonies, traite et oeuvre vraiment digne de l'activite imperiale , ainsi qu'un traite de politique a l'usage de son fils. Notre edition presente en deux volumes Le Livre des Ceremonies, assorti d'un commentaire fouille. Ecrit par l'empereur lui-meme dans les coulisses du pouvoir, non loin de la fameuse chambre de porphyre ou naissaient les empereurs, Le Livre des Ceremonies rassemble les regles a suivre lors des grands evenements, spirituels ou temporels, du protocole byzantin. Consignees pour les successeurs de l'empereur, ces coutumes n'ont rien d'accessoire, et participent a la conservation de la dynastie si bien que le texte est pour nous un temoignage inestimable. Le Livre I regroupe les ceremonies religieuses et propose notamment une etonnante description de la semaine pascale, tandis que le second est consacre aux activites profanes, telles que mariages, couronnements ou jeux gothiques. Chaque livre est suivi d'un tome entier reserve au commentaire, constituant une veritable somme sur le texte et son auteur. Dans ces pages le lecteur trouvera un apercu haut en couleur des pompes et circonstances de la civilisation byzantine. L'ouvrage est en outre enrichi d'une carte et d'un index.
