Die byzantinische Literatur ist außerhalb eines engen Kreises von Spezialisten bisher weitgehend unbekannt geblieben. Nur wenige Autoren wie Prokop, Michael Psellos oder Anna Komnene sind außerhalb dieses Kreises zumindest als Namen bekannt. So fehlt es auch bis heute an einer für ein größeres Publikum bestimmten Darstellung der Geschichte dieser Literatur. Diese Lücke schließt das vorliegende Buch mit einer nicht nach Gattungen geordneten, sondern chronologischen Darstellung. Die Auswahl der Autoren ist durch den literarischen Wert ihrer Texte bestimmt. Jedes Kapitel wird mit einem kulturhistorischen Überblick über die betreffende Epoche eingeleitet. Für weitere Information wird auf Textausgaben und Übersetzungen sowie auf wichtige Sekundärliteratur hingewiesen. Im letzten Kapitel werden allgemeine Fragen zur byzantinischen Literatur, zum byzantinischen Griechisch u.a.m. behandelt. Worterklärungen und ein Register schließen das Buch ab.
