Le deuxie me axe concerne ce que l'on a appele "la the ologie de l'ico ne" . Il e tait en effet ne cessaire de prendre en compte l'influence qu'ont exerce les textes des Pe res de l'E glise (IVe sie cle) sur l'e laboration de l'esthe tique de l'ico ne, et de relier son iconographie aux e vangiles, prie res et chants liturgiques, ainsi qu'aux commentaires des the ologiens. Pour comprendre l'extraordinaire rayonnement de l'ico ne, il est e galement indispensable de savoir en quoi elle diffe re des autres cate gories d'oeuvres d'art. S'il s'agit d'un objet sacre , l'ico ne est aussi un objet du culte. Elle exige des pre tres et des fide les un ensemble de marques de ve ne ration. En somme, l'ico ne e tait e galement un phe nome ne de socie te qui avait une fonction pre cise dans les ce re monies de la cour, les sie ges et les batailles. Mais l'image mobile byzantine signifiait avant tout la pre sence du repre sente , parce qu'elle e tait cense e recevoir les "e nergies" de celui ou celle qu'elle figurait. De cette fac on l'ico ne devenait un interme diaire entre le ciel et le monde des hommes. Enfin, le troisie me axe de l'ouvrage s'attache a e tudier l'e volution du style et de l'iconographie de l'ico ne au cours des sie cles.
