Fondée en 1960 par le professeur Alfonso Caycedo, neuro-psychiatre mondialement connu, la sophrologie est à la fois une science, une philosophie, une thérapeutique. Son propos est l'étude phénoménologique de tous les moyens psychologiques, physiques, chimiques, physiologiques, capables d'agir sur la conscience humaine et de la modifier. C'est ainsi qu'elle se penche aussi bien sur les systèmes d'entraînement orientaux, tels que le Zen et le Yoga, que sur la psychopharmacologie moderne, sans négliger les états de conscience obtenus dans les systèmes plus ou moins primitifs par certains peuples ou certaines sectes : extase des chamans, transes cultuelles du Vaudou du Macumba et des Machis. L'école sophrologique a l'immense mérite d'avoir jeté un pont entre l'Orient et l'Occident. Le professeur Caycedo a vécu aux Indes et au Japon et mis au point une technique de relaxation dynamique en trois degrés : un degré indien, un degré bouddhiste et un degré Zen. Par le biais de la concentration, de la méditation et de la contemplation, la relaxation dynamique de Caycedo constitue une arme extraordinaire dans le traitement des névroses et des " maladies de la civilisation ". Mais la sophrologie est avant tout une philosophie dont le but essentiel est la recherche d'un équilibre de la personnalité humaine. Ancien attaché au Centre médico-chirurgical cardio-vasculaire de la Pitié, le Dr Rager a participé à des recherches sur la balisto-cardiographie en France et aux U. S. A Son livre, L'Infractus ne tue pas, a été traduit en cinq langues. Membre de l'American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, le Dr Rager fut nommé en 1970, après sa rencontre avec le professeur Caycedo, professeur à l'Ecole supérieure de sophrologie et, en 1972, directeur du Centre de Sophrologie de Bordeaux.
